Spear Successfully Removed from Teen's Head

This miraculous story could very well have been a tragedy and it is important to keep in mind that the only safe gun is an unloaded gun - always be mindful of where your gun is pointing.

A 16-year-old Miami boy is lucky to be alive, and without serious damage, after being accidentally shot in the head with a speargun. Jackson Memorial Hospital revealed this week the details surrounding how they managed to remove the spear to save the teenagers life.

According to Miami News Times, Yasser Lopez was spearfishing in a lake with a friend when, while loading the speargun, it accidentally went off and hit Lopez in the head, very narrowly missing his right eye. The boy was conscious when he was airlifted to the hospital.

Photos released this week show that the spear actually penetrated all the way through Lopez's head, and exited through the other side.

It took three hours for Dr Ross Bullock, a trauma neurosurgeon, toremove the spear. Miraculously, it had missed major vessels in the teenagers brain. While he is currently having difficulties speaking, doctors say he may full function without furter surgery.
