    The perfect start to begin learning to freedive with a Master Instructor! Is your dream to get as close to fish and marine wildlife underwater as you can? To feel part of the ocean, not just like an intruder on a mission?

    The PADI Freediver education system offers you the simplest way to become a better spearfishing enthusiast, freediver and underwater adventurer.

    You will develop the foundation skills, breathing and relaxation techniques, safety knowledge and practices to make your diving more comfortable, economic and stronger.

    • Minimum Age: 15 (with parent/guardian consent)
    • Duration: Up to 20 hours

    • Classroom theory and practical breathing & relaxation skills

    What will you learn?

    The PADI Freediver course consists of three main phases:

    • PADI Freediver Basic knowledge development through independent study with the PADI Freediver Touch™ plus classroom theory and practical training
    • Confined water session to learn breathhold techniques as well as static and dynamic apnea, plus proper buddy procedures. Goal – static apnea of 90 seconds and dynamic apnea of 25 metres
    • Open water sessions to practice free immersion and constant weight freedives, plus proper buddy procedures. Goal – constant weight freedive of 10 metres/30 feet

    The practical training session includes:

    • Breathing preparation and recovery breaths
    • Surface protocol
    • Buddy technique
    • Static breath holds
    • Buoyancy for freedivers
    • Underwater swimming, streamlining and finning technique
    • Rescue techniques and underwater rescue
    • Personal refinement and tips
    Session goals

    The goals of the PADI Freediver course are to:

    • Develop your understanding of the underwater world and how it interacts with your body, and how that affects you when freediving
    • Guide you in choosing appropriate gear for freediving
    • Develop your basic skill in three forms of freediving

    Certification Requirements:

    To obtain a PADI Freediver certification the participant must:

    • Demonstrate the ability to swim continuously on the surface 200 metres/yards without swim aids, or 300 metres/yards using mask, fins and snorkel
    • Complete the self-paced learning knowledge development segment, including Knowledge Review, Freediver Exam and Freediver Quick Review
    • Complete Freediver Confined Water Session
    • Make one static apnea attempt of at least 90 seconds and one dynamic apnea must be at least 25 metres/80 feet.
    • Open water sessions to practice free immersion and constant weight freedives, plus proper buddy procedures. Goal – constant weight freedive of 10 metres/30 feet.

    Course Schedule


    The course offers a flexible structure for participants to learn at the best individual pace. Some like a condensed intensive few days, others like to spread it out over a few weeks.

    • Self-paced online training completed before the Basic course
    • Friday 4-9pm - Meet at Adreno for the PADI Freediver Basic course (classroom + pool)
    • Sat/Sun 9am - 2 x 2hr PADI Freediver training boat dives (at own pace)

    About the boat dives


    WaterMaarq is a full service local charter boat operation that provides guided boat dives for adventure and training on the Mornington Peninsula. It offers snorkelling and freediving for all ages and abilities in small groups of up to six people. Our aim is to make your in water experience calmer, more enjoyable and fascinating. We work with all abilities including certified freedivers, non-swimmers, stressed swimmers and those that have just never had the chance to relax and enjoy the water in the way they’d like to. Experienced snorkelers and certified freedivers will enjoy closer encounters with wildlife and see brilliant colour and movement. To learn faster, develop open water skills and explore Port Phillip Bay and the waters of the Mornington Peninsula, do it with our RIB boat dive tours. Join a local guide and skipper, step aboard a locally-built boat and spend a few moments exploring underwater in our unique part of the world.

    • Certified freedivers only, or freedivers enrolled in a PADI Freediver course
    • In-water guided adventure or training dives
    • All safety floats and lines provided

    Key information

    Who can join a boat dive? Our freediving boat dives are open to all certified freedivers

    Freedivers with an existing certification from a recognised agency (Level 1 or greater) are welcome to join all our freediving activities. Recognised agencies include SSI Freediving, Apnea Academy, AIDA, Apnea International (formerly Apnea Australia), PFI and FII. If in doubt, please ask us and we’ll provide further advice

    • Certified freedivers will enjoy the depths of the bay
    • Limited to just six guests, you’ll enjoy an uninterrupted underwater experience
    • The tour departs from Sorrento, VIC

    Training Boat Dives:

    The freediving training excursions are focused on providing line-diving training in a range of conditions to develop you to new levels in comfort and strength. Less about marine life and much more about you as a freediver as the professional instructor shapes your individual development. Ideal for freedivers enrolled in a course or certified freedivers wishing to develop their skills and technique.

    Fun freedive adventure boat dives:

    Swim with wildlife and discover reefs and wrecks on the Bay Freediving Boat Dive Adventure aboard the RIB boat, Kavorca. Spend an exciting couple of hours on the vast Port Phillip Bay, freediving by boat along the Mornington Peninsula. Swim with Australian Fur Seals and fish species found only in temperate waters like Boarfish and Weedy Seadragons.

    Dive Schedule

    Boat dives are scheduled to take advantage of the best sites for the prevailing conditions, tides and dive purpose on the day.

    • Departures: Ex-Sorrento
    • Training Dives: Sat/Sun 9am
    • Fun Adventure Dives: Sat/Sun 11:30am and other times by arrangement

    Big Wave Surf Training Course

    About the course

    This breathhold training course specifically tuned for surfers will take you closer to the wave your dream of. No matter what level of board rider, body surfer or swimmer you are, no matter what waves you surf – you will benefit from being calmer, recovering more quickly and being ready to handle wve after wave with more confidence. After years of experience in the field of breathing and high performance training we have a system that will maximise your ability to perform in extreme conditions. In this course you’ll perform a series of breathing drills and demonstrate your new surf survival skills in real time. You can apply them straight away in your next surf.

    Specifically tailored for surfers, you can be confident you’re getting the best training backed by world class freediving certification. Completing this surf training course, you’ll also qualify for PADI Basic Freediver certification, the first step in developing solid freediving skills. The basic freediving principles and breathhold techniques learned in this course can be taken further if you choose. It’s the starting point for all freediving courses. By enrolling in the PADI Freediver Basic course you can later choose to progress towards the PADI Freediver certification by completing open water dives, but as a surfer, you don’t have to.

    • Duration: Up to 16 hours

        The Practical training session includes:

        • Breathing preparation and recovery breaths
        • Surface protocol
        • Buddy technique
        • Static breath holds
        • Stress and mental management
        • Big wave hold-down simulations
        • Rescue techniques and underwater rescue
        • Personal refinement and tips

        Session Goals

        The goals of the course are to:

        • Develop your understanding of the underwater world and how it interacts with your body, and how that affects you when holding your breath
        • Gain exciting new surf survival skills and have fun in the process
        • Adopt techniques to improve your big wave surfing performance, relaxation and breath-hold safely

        • Demonstrate the ability to swim continuously on the surface 200 metres/yards without swim aids, or 300 metres/yards using mask, fins and snorkel

        Meet your instructor

        Marlon Quinn, PADI Master Freediving Instructor To become a specialist freediving instructor, Marlon first learned to freedive with the best in the world. He began with the godfather of Greek freediving, World and National Champion, Stavros Kastrinakis. Later he trained with:

        • Umberto Pelizzari, World Record holder in every freediving discipline
        • Daniel Arias Cordova, National Champion, Chile
        • Miguel Lozano, World Vice Champion and Spanish record holder
        • Andrea Zuccari, World, Swiss and Italian record holder
        • Alessandro Vergendo, Olympic Athlete sports psychologist and mental training expert.

        With a background as a competitive cyclist, racing in Australia, Asia and Europe, his athletic and coaching career spans more than 15 years and peaked in that discipline as Sports Director for Prime Estate Elite Women’s Cycling Team.

        As a freediver and instructor, Marlon sought to discover as much as possible about freediving and first became certified as a freediver under the AIDA certification system, up to AIDA 4*.

        Keen to understand freediving from a range of philosophies and training techniques, he became a qualified freediving instructor under Apnea International, then Apnea Academy under the guidance of Umberto Pelizzari.

        Founder and former President of the Melbourne Freedivers Club, Australian qualified Trainer (Cert IV TAE) and Coxswain Grade 1NC Skipper, he is pioneering freediving services, including dedicated charter boat service, sinkhole freediving tours and certification courses in Australia through WaterMaarq.
